Svenska Spel sued Ladbrokes in May 2008 because they used the slogan “Swedish games – English odds”. In the Ladbrokes commercial the Svenska Spel logo was visible, in the form of a cut paper man. This had Svenska Spel suing Ladbrokes for trademark infringement. Svenska Spel claimed that Ladbrokes had misused Svenska Spel’s trademark and that only Svenska Spel may use the combination “Swedish” and “games” for commercial purposes in advertising and marketing. The Market Court ruled that Ladbrokes can not be sued for trademark infringement in their commercials. As Svenska Spel sued Ladbrokes, Ladbrokes sued Svenska Spel for having used terms such as “Svenska Spel is a world leader in responsible gaming” and “the most effective age verification online”. Also in this case, Ladbrokes won the law suit which prohibits Svenska Spel from using these claims under penalty of SEK 750 000 in marketing penalties. After the verdict Andreas Gillberg, Ladbrokes Sweden said: -Of course, this is a great day for Ladbrokes. It is a victory to confirm that Svenska Spel, after all, do not have a monopoly on the Swedish language.
