UIGEA stands for Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and is a U.S. law that prohibits companies and banks to make transfers to and from online gaming companies. The purpose of UIGEA was said to be to stop American poker players from playing online poker to prevent gambling addiction. However, the main reason was to prevent American money from leaving the U.S. and being transferred to foreign poker companies. UIGEA does not only affect poker players, since casino players who play online in the United States have great difficulties when it comes to depositing money and playing in online casinos.
Congress Members Barney Frank and Jim McDermott are pushing to introduce a new law that would replace UIGEA, and thus lighten the rules surrounding online games. The new legislation would still give the U.S. government complete control of online gaming, in order to prevent the black online casino market from growing and becoming even more established than it is today.
